SuperKids Camp is a six-week summer reading enrichment program which has served more than 15,000 Baltimore City elementary school aged children. In 2007 we were honored to be the recipient of the Johns Hopkins Center for Summer Learning's Excellence in Summer Learning Award which "recognizes outstanding summer programs that demonstrate excellence in accelerating academic achievement and promoting positive development for young people."
SuperKids Camp 2009 is planned to take place June 29 through August 7, 2009 (excluding July 4) and will serve Baltimore City Public School elementary students. Camp will operate Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm. Further details will be made available on our website in the spring of 2009. Find out more information about the program by clicking on one of our Frequently Asked Questions below:
What is SuperKids Camp all about? SuperKids Camp is a program that combines intensive reading instruction, incentive-based reading challenges, and a variety of literacy-based enrichment activities. Our program works effectively to counter negative attitudes, discouragement and poor self-esteem that profoundly affect a child’s belief in his or her ability to read. SuperKids Camp is the largest non-school based summer academic enrichment program in Baltimore City. It is sponsored through a combination of state and local government, corporate and individual donations, and private foundation funds.

What kinds of experiences do the children receive? Participants receive intensive reading instruction while participating in a variety of enrichment experiences at locations throughout Baltimore City. Through partnerships with more than 20 institutions, camp participants are afforded the unique opportunity to enjoy stimulating activities including sailing, performing arts, science, music, drama, swimming, and many others. SuperKids Camp is an excellent opportunity for children to experience the joy of learning while having fun during the summer months. Each day students receive breakfast, lunch and transportation. Does it really help children’s achievement? The simple answer is a resounding “YES.” Each year of operation approximately 80% of participants have maintained or gained in their literacy development. Final analysis of our 2007 program was conducted by Epiphanies, Inc. and the final report stated the following:
Data sources revealed a clear and positive impact of SuperKids Camp on students’ ability to read. Further, by the end of the six-week camp, students were prepared for their next grade level. On all measures of the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills), students demonstrated statistically significant growth. The Garfield Student Survey revealed that students’ motivation to read was strong at the conclusion of camp and students thoroughly enjoyed many elements of the curriculum. Staff surveys indicated an overwhelming improvement in reading ability, reading interest, and attitude toward reading by students. Children also reported enjoying their experiences at the camp.
Overall, SuperKids Camp 2007 was a success. Instead of losing skills over the summer and being unprepared for school in the next academic year, all students who participated in testing maintained or improved in one or more of the literacy domains measured and students scores revealed they were ready and "at-grade-level" to begin their next academic year.

Where are the transportation pick-up points and camp site locations? We will have nearly 80 pick-up locations at elementary schools throughout the city which are determined when registration is closed. All children will be picked up from their current elementary school or one in close proximity. Once picked up from a local elementary school, children are then bused to 1 of our 10 camp site locations. Click here to view a list of our 2008 SuperKids Camp sites.
