What is SuperKids Camp all about? SuperKids Camp is a program that combines intensive reading instruction, incentive-based reading challenges, and a variety of literacy-based enrichment activities. Our program works effectively to counter negative attitudes, discouragement and poor self-esteem that profoundly affect a child’s belief in his or her ability to read. SuperKids Camp is the largest non-school based summer academic enrichment program in Baltimore City. It is sponsored through a combination of state and local government, corporate and individual donations, and private foundation funds.

What kinds of experiences do the children receive? Participants receive intensive reading instruction while participating in a variety of enrichment experiences at locations throughout Baltimore City. Does it really help children’s achievement? The simple answer is a resounding “YES.” Each year of operation approximately 80% of participants have maintained or gained in their literacy development. Final analysis of our 2008 program was conducted by Epiphanies, Inc. and the final report stated the following:
Data sources revealed a clear and positive impact of SuperKids Camp on students’ ability to read and do math. Furthermore, by the end of the six-week camp, students were prepared for their next grade level in reading. On all measures of the DIBELS, on average, students demonstrated statistically significant growth. Students increased in speed and accuracy on math “Fast Facts” in addition and subtraction. Students’ motivation to read was strong at the conclusion of camp and they thoroughly enjoyed many elements of the curriculum, in both reading and math. Staff surveys indicated an overwhelming improvement in reading ability, reading interest, and attitude toward reading by students and 100 percent agreed that SuperKids Camp has a positive impact on children. Curriculum goals of the camp and all enrichment providers are to be in line with MSDE Voluntary State Curriculum, and the Literacy Links activities were mostly fun and engaging.
Overall, SuperKids Camp 2008 was a success. In just 29 summer days, instead of losing skills and slowly becoming unprepared for their next academic year, all students who participated in SuperKids Camp and were tested improved in both reading and math skills. That is impressive!
Based on our mid program evaluation from last summer, nearly 90% of parents believed that SuperKids Camp has better prepared their child for the school year both academically and socially.

Where are the transportation pick-up points and camp site locations? We will have numerous pick-up locations at elementary schools throughout the city which are determined when registration is closed. Most children will be picked up from their current elementary school or one in close proximity. Once picked up from a local elementary school, children are then bused to one of our camp site locations. View a list of our 2009 site locations.

Can I pick the camp site my child will attend? Parks & People will determine which site each participant will attend. We promise that ALL children, no matter the site, will have a diverse, exciting and educational summer camp experience.
