Baltimore
Baseball League
Since 1992, the Baltimore Baseball League (BBL)
has used sports as a vehicle to reinforce academic
achievement for boys and girls beginning at the elementary
level and progressing to teams at the middle school
level in Baltimore City Public Schools. During
the spring, more than 500 students in 4th through
8th grades form teams and compete. Teams practice
after school and play games from April until June.
The BBL elementary school teams play games at
Baltimore City Recreation &
Parks Centers on Saturdays. The middle school
teams play after school during the week.
The
Baltimore Baseball League is an excellent opportunity
for young people to learn the basic skills of
baseball and remain actively involved in a physical
fitness activity. For many participants, this
is their only opportunity to participate in a
structured athletic program. However, along with
building baseball skills, the league also instills
in players the importance of school by monitoring
their schoolwork, attendance and citizenship at
school. Academic and civic progress is tracked.
The
Baltimore Baseball League is sponsored in partnership
with The Abell Foundation, Baltimore City Department
of Recreation and Parks, Baltimore City Public
Schools.
